Biology lessons

The first week we slit
a worm and learned
to pin back its skin
precisely.

The second week
a girl was sent
for thirty herring
which we gutted,
taking care with
the air bladder.

The third week
I sneaked away through
rows of jars and cages
and watched a hare
race over the cornfield
